Theatre Breaks in London - ChicagoMusicals make great theatre breaks in London and I'm going to start off by recommending Chicago Chicago Theatre Facts and Figures Chicago is the longest running Broadway musical on the West End. In London it has played to an audience of over 4.5 million people and more than 4,000 performances. The musical transferred from the Adelphi Theatre to the Cambridge Theatre in April last year. After it opened almost 10 years ago at the Adelphi Theatre the show won the 1998 Laurence Olivier Award for 'Outstanding Musical Production' and the 1998 Critics Circle Drama Award for 'Best Musical'. Based on a play by Maurine Dallas Watkins with a book by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse. The musicis by John Kander and the lyrics by Fred Ebb. The West End production is staged by the original Broadway creative team. The show is booking until July 2009. Kelly Osbourne Debuts in Chicago One of the ways they keep the musical fresh is by bringing in interesting new cast members. The latest of these is Kelly Osbourne who's been playing the role of Mama Morton, the prison matron, since September. Kelly suffers from terrible stage fright and recently admitted that she was so scared on the first night she was almost sick on stage. But like a true trouper she swallowed her fear and the vomit (eew!) and carried on. She's certainly looking trim and gorgeous in the publicity shots but some people have suggested these might have been airbrushed (shock horror!). I've long suspected that appearing nightly in a musical might be the ultimate weight loss regime! Kelly herself is reported to have put her new figure down to getting rid of her microwave! She also said: "In the words of Bridget Jones, I will always be a little fat and I don't care. When you're my height, a couple of pounds off or on does make a difference. I'll always have a double chin in a pap shot, no matter how I look." Source Kelly plays the role taken by Queen Latifah in the film version. At only 22 she's the youngest actress to tackle it on stage. The role isn't huge but it is still quite demanding for someone with very little stage experience or training. People seem to be agreed that she's making a pretty good job of it, silencing her critics and those who suggested she has little or no talent and would not be able to make it to the end of her run. In fact she's doing so well that her run has been extended by an extra week. Several of her celebrity friends have been to see her performance including Kate Moss and Amy Winehouse. Kelly Osbourne's stage debut will now run until Nov 7th. Who is next? I wonder who will take over? I'll update this post as soon as I can find out! How to get there Cambridge Theatre is on Earlham Street, London, WC2 9HU It's in the area near Covent Garden now known as Seven Dials. Don't try to get there via Covent Garden tube as it's currently partially closed! Walk from Tottenham Court Rd, if you have to use the tube, or Charing Cross station if you can get a train. Alternatively try to make sure you get a hotel within easy walking distance of the Covent Garden area. Actually that's good advice anyway as the area is great :-) There are lots of yummy shops to browse, cafes and restaurants to eat in, it's one of my favourite areas of London and deserves a section of theatre breaks in London all to itself! 6:23 AM - 10/9/2007 - post comment
