Do indestructible dog toys really exist? Those of us with chew-happy dogs might wonder. In this article we will guide you on selecting a tough, long lasting toy for your dog.

To begin with, unless a dog toy is made of titanium, it will not truly be indestructible. However, it's easier than you may think to find dog toys that are well made, long lasting, and still fun for play.

The trick to finding a durable dog toy is not at all magical. You just have to understand a few basic concepts:

* Dog toys are most often damaged by chewing and tugging
* A dog's jaw is strongest at the back
* Toy size, shape and materials matter
* Know your dog's style behavior and style of play

Dogs instinctively must chew. This behavior is normal and there is nothing wrong with it, as long as your dog is trained and, very importantly, stocked with the right kind of toys to hold his or her attention. Chewing may be more common among puppies and dogs under two years old, and often chewing behavior diminishes with age.

A dog's jaw is powerfully strong. Even for a little dog, some of the strongest muscles in a dog's body are located in the jaw. Additionally, most of the strength in a dog's jaw is in the back. That's where a dog does the most powerful chewing. But give a dog an appropriately-sized ball and he will not be able to get the ball to the back of the jaws. For this reason, stick with balls and other round toys for the most aggressive chewers.

Selecting the right-size dog toy is important - not just for selecting a long lasting toy, but also for the safety of your dog. A toy that is too small can become a choking hazard, or more easily chewed into pieces that can be swallowed. Remember, consider the shape of the toy and how easily it will fit into the back of your dog's jaw. Areas small enough to fit easily in the back of the jaw are likely to be destroyed first.

Above all, supervise your dog while playing and immediately discard any toy that becomes damaged.
