Generally speaking Private Tuition is usually sought by parents and students when the student is struggling with a subject and needs extra help. At Primary level this can mean problems with basic literacy, math’s, science or other non-core subjects. Quite often the child has become de-motivated by their inability to progress at the same rate as their friends and as a result lacks confidence. At GCSE and A-Level the reasons for using a private tutor are, whilst fundamentally the same, slightly more complex. There is a dramatic change in the level of knowledge and work required between GCSE and A’ level, and often teachers simply cannot find extra time to help those struggling to understand their subject and cope with the workload. This is not the teachers’ fault – their workloads simply do not allow them the extra time to spend with students. Often there is not even enough class time to cover the curriculum properly. Often the parents of the student will offer to pay for private tuition in the hope that this will ensure a good exam result. There are no guarantees, but private tuition can provide the extra push needed to enable the student to attain the grade they need. It’s important to be realistic.
