Curt Weldon, Economic Security and Energy
Continuing his commitment to energy and economic security, Congressman Curt Weldon supported legislation that generates American jobs and strives to make our country independent of the Middle Eastern oil, as well as drive down energy prices across our country and the district. These initiatives are in step with Congressman’s commitment to energy security and the development of alternative and environmentally clean energy sources such as solar, wind, hydrogen and fuel cell power.
During the 109th Congress, Curt Weldon cosponsored HR 5206, Securing America's Energy Independence Act of 2006. This act will amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to extend the investment tax credit to solar energy fuel cell development. Pennsylvania is home to one of the largest coal reserves in the United States, and was once a leader in coal production. Given the abundance of this energy source, Congressman Weldon supported HR 5453, which amends the Internal Revenue Code to extend the excise tax credits for certain liquid fuel derived from coal. In order to support our nation’s technological development away from the dependence on oil, Congressman joined his fellow members of Congress in a bipartisan support of HR 5143 - H-Prize Act of 2006, which authorizes the Secretary of Energy to establish monetary prizes for achievements in overcoming scientific and technical barriers associated with hydrogen energy. This clean-burning fuel with minimal environmental effect needs a strong academic and industrial base in order to emerge as one of the key sources of American energy in the coming decades. Congressional support for these new technologies is vital, and Curt Weldon will continue to support these initiatives that aim to lessen the economic burden on our district’s families.
To cement America’ coming independence from the Middle Eastern oil supplies, Curt Weldon voted for the HR 5429 - American-Made Energy and Good Jobs Act. This act will direct the Secretary of the Interior to establish and implement a competitive oil and gas leasing program that will result in an environmentally sound program for the exploration, development, and production of the oil and gas resources of the Coastal Plain of Alaska. Once the exploration will commence, this site will supply as much oil as we currently import from Saudi Arabia, as well as generate thousands of American jobs.
